Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra's film Baar Baar Dekho isn't doing great at the box-office, but we really need to thank them for bringing Kala Chashma back to our playlists. This 1990's song is topping the radio charts and everyone is humming the tune since the day it was unveiled on YouTube.
However, there is one person who never got the deserved due for the song. According to a report, this 1990's hit song was not written by a well-known B-town lyricist but a Punjab Police head constable.
However, there is one person who never got the deserved due for the song. According to a report, this 1990's hit song was not written by a well-known B-town lyricist but a Punjab Police head constable.
A Hindustan Times report claims that a head constable in the Punjab police from Kapurthala, Amrik Singh Shera is also one of the writers of the song.
Amrik Singh, 43, a native of Talwandi Chaudhrian village near Jalandhar had penned the song. But never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that the song would one day become such an integral part of a film. Talking to HT, he said,
“Two months ago, I got a call from one of my friends that ‘Kala Chashma’ was being played on one of the channels. I do not know how I felt. I was happy but also shocked about everything that was happening.”
The report claims that he was paid Rs 11,000 for the song. He had written the song when he was 15 and was studying in Class 9. He says he had approached many singers at the time with his songs for release and that the song was a tribute to his village.
Amrik Singh added that he was approached by Jalandhar-based Angel Record Company four months ago for other songs. He added, “And I was told that a Mumbai-based company needed my song to be played at the inauguration of cement firm. I don’t know the name of the cement company. No one told me that the song will feature in a movie.”
When he was asked if he has any grudges against anyone for using the song, he said,
“No one from the film industry called me to Mumbai during the music launch or screening of the film. I just wanted to go there and let everyone know that a person from a small village in Punjab has written the song.”
Revealing the real story behind the popularity of the track, he said,
"Amar Arshi (singer of the song) then took the song ‘Kala Chashma’ and performed it at a function in England. A company there released the song in England and it became a huge hit. Then, a Chandigarh-based company released the song in Punjab and that is how it became popular here.”
His only grudge against how the music industry works is that a song becomes popular only when it reaches Bollywood. He added, “Punjabi song writers do not get their due. Being a writer here is not easy.”
